Science is fun! Water Cycle experiments.

On Monday we did an experiment to find out if liquids can turn into solids.
We poured water (liquid) into iceblock containers and put them in the freezer. We timed how long it would take to freeze the water. We looked at the containers every hour to see what was happening.

After the first hour  it was frozen on the top but still liquid in the middle. There was also bubble of air inside the ice.

After 4 1/2 hours they were finally frozen.  We  noticed that they were hard and solid. The liquid had all turned solid.

Then came the fun part! The delicious part! The part we had waited for all day!

As we ate our iceblocks a crazy  thing happened. The solid water turned back into liquid and melted all over us! What fun! Science is cool!

Cross country race 2015.

We ran our cross country race last week on Thursday morning. We had been training for 5 weeks. We set ourselves goals in the first week of the term so that we could improve our fitness.
Everyone was very excited about running. Year 1 went around the field 1 1/2 times. Year 2 runners had to go past the Junior playground and follow the fenceline through the forest and then up the path that leads back to the field. They then had to do a full length of the field and sprint to the finish line. Ms Hodgson gave us some tips and had a talk before we ran. We were fired up!

All of us ran as hard as we could. We were very proud of our effort. The Year 2's thought that running up the path that was on a steep slope was the hardest part.

Our class had a lot of place getters in Year 1 and Year 2. The boys and girls ran different races. Congratulations to all the champs from Room 5.

Descriptions: Griffin.

We are learning to write descriptions. Here is Macey's description about Griffin.

The Wonderful Griffin

Griffin has eyes that are round like burnt cookies straight out of the oven. His nose is as spongy and soft as a cloud. His teeth are as sharp and shiny as a knife. Griffin’s moe-hawk sticks up like an eagle’s feather. Griffin’s body looks like an orange fluffy lion. His tail is like a roller coaster zooming around in circles.

Farewell Hayley

Today was Hayley's last day in our room. She is going to live in Ruakaka with her mother and Grandmother.
Ms Hodgson made her person of the week because she has worked hard and is so wonderful.
We are sad because we will miss her smiling face in our room. We like the way she always helps everyone and is friendly and kind.  We wish her and her family all the best for the future.

Griffin visits Room 5.

Ms Hodgson brought her dog into class this morning. He is a Griffin dog and his name is Griffin. We are learning to use similes to describe things. We wrote a description about Griffin. We worked in pairs doing Rally Coach where one person coaches and one writes. We wrote a line each and then swapped over.

Some of our best sentences were:

Griffin has a spongy nose that looks like burnt marshmallows - Summer and Casey
His moe hawk is like a wave - Tommy and Macey
Griffin is cute like a kitten. His ears are floppy and silky. - Anji and Aza.
He is soft and fluffy like a polar bear - Layla and Ollie.
He stands up and begs like a meer cat.
Griffin is as silky as a blanket. He is hilarious and very stinky - Ernie and Mikayla
Griffins nose is like a little black puddle. -Lulu and Joseph
Griffins tail is curly like a squirrels. Hayley and Daniel.
His teeth are like a dragons. Sticking out and sharp - Keelan and Elayna.
Griffin is golden and white - Tanith and Dylan
His ears are smooth like silky material - Lulu and Joseph
He has googley eyes and a mustache around his black nose. - Sienna and Holly
His moe hawk sticks up like a hedgehogs spikes. - Keelan
He is stinky like a snail and as cute as a panda. His chest is round like a lions.- Lily and Blake.
His eyes are like brown dirt. His noes is black like the night sky.-Rachel.
His eyes are googly as a goldfish. His teeth are as sharp as a knife - Lewis.

Wow, Ms Hodgson ca'nt wait to see what we write tomorrow.

Hundertwasser Art

Hundertwasser is a famous artist from up north. He draws pictures and paints. He also has designed buildings that are all over the world. He never uses straight lines. He uses curves and squiggles. He also draws patterns in his art. His work is always colourful and attractive. We tried to copy how he draws his flowers. We used hot and cold colours to make our flowers stand out. We really enjoyed doing our flowers.

Our Super Grass Growing Experiment.

We wanted to find out how grass grows? We did a big experiment and planted some grass. We did one lot of grass that had no water. We did one lot of grass that had too much water. We did the last lot with no sun.  The one in the cupboard grew a little bit  but went yellow. The one with no water grew for a few days,  then it stopped growing and died. The one with too much water was the smallest in the class. We think they grew a bit without sun or water because the soil we planted them in had a bit of water and food in it.

Everyone had their own cup of grass. We had to give it water and sunshine to make it grow.
We decided that grass needs water and sunshine to grow.

Carrot Cars

In our discovery programme one of our favourite activities has been to make carrot cars.

We had to figure out how to make them oourselves. We made choices about  how many wheels we wanted, Also weather we wanted a roof or a seat.  Some people put steering wheels and gear sticks.  One boy from room 11 even put a bumper bar on the front of his. Ernie and Lewis built the ramp.

We enjoyed making our cars. It was a lot of fun. Daniels went fast but the wheels kept flying off. So he had to fix that by making the stick longer that held the wheel on.  Ollie's car went down sideways. Joe Joe's car went zooming down no problem at all.
 Enjoy our photo's.

Room 5 Rockets

We were asked to make a rocket for homework. Dad and I made mine out of cardboard. We could choose to make it any size and any way we wanted.
We used metal pipes for the boosters where the flames come out and I decorated the middle of the rocket.
Some rockets were tall, some were small. Tanith even had a birthday rocket with a bow on it.
We wrote imaginary stories about traveling to a new planet in our rocket.
