A 'right' means something that everyone should have and deserves.
For example every child has the right to learn.
Ms Hodgson told us all about some people who have fought for their rights.
Nelson Mandela is a great example.
He lived in South Africa and was born in July 1918. He went to school in a school just for people with dark skin. They couldnt go to the same school as white people. They couldnt use the same buses and they couldnt do the same jobs. Which meant that they were paid less and were poorer.
He spoke up and organised meetings. At the meetings he told the black people that how they were being treated was wrong. Everyone has the same rights.
The government put him in jail for 20 years.
He continued his fight while he was in jail. When he got out he was voted in as the president.
and made law changes so the blacks had the same rights as whites.
We talked about our rights at school and made posters of our rights and responsiblities.
This is so we can all get along and learn as much as possible.
Here are a few photos of Nelson Mandela.
