Room 5 Rights and Responsibilities

We have been learning about rights and responsibilities in our room.
A 'right' means something that everyone should have and deserves.
For example every child has the right to learn.

Ms Hodgson told us all about some people who have fought for their rights.
Nelson Mandela is a great example.
He lived in  South Africa and was born in July 1918. He went to school in a school just for people with dark skin. They couldnt go to the same school as white people. They couldnt use the same buses and they couldnt do the same jobs. Which meant that they were paid less and were poorer.

He spoke up and organised meetings. At the meetings he told the black people that how they were being treated was wrong. Everyone has the same rights.
The government put him in jail for 20 years.

He continued his fight while he was in jail. When he got out  he was voted in as the president.
and made law changes so the blacks had the same rights as whites.

We talked about our rights at school and made posters of our rights and responsiblities.
This is so we can all get along and learn as much as possible.

Here are a few photos of Nelson Mandela.

Blowing Bubbles is Fun.

During the first week at school we read an article that told us how to blow bubbles. It told us how to  make bubble mix and use wire, straws and our hands to blow bubbles. We made bubble mixture with detergent, oil and a little bit of water. We bent the wire to make a loop, we cut the ends of straws and folded them back. We also used our thumbs and fingers to make circles.

We raced out side and gave it a go. We dipped everything in the mix and blew gently. Before you knew it we had bubbles floating all around us.
One even popped on Grace's nose. Carter decided that he would run after them and pop them.
Che made a huge bubble with his wire, Liam had more luck with the straws.

When we got back to class we wrote poems and put them on our wall.

Goal setting.

We have been discussing what a 'Goal' is and why we have them.
We  decided that a goal is something you want to achieve.
In our school Whakautoki we have a line that says
Ka whai i te taumata  which means  Chase the pinnacle.
A goal is something that you try to do with all your might and strength.
If you work hard and climb the mountain you will achieve your goals.

You need to think about what a good goal is and decide what it will be.
Then you need to plan how you will achieve it.

We have been discussing our goals for handwriting, reading and writing.
Ms Hodgson says 'You need to know what you are aiming for or you wont do it.'
