That was Summer - Poems by Room 5.

Room 5 has beenlooking at Marci Ridlons poems. Marci Ridlon is an amazing poet. Room 5 liked her poem That Was Summer so much that they decided to use her format to write similar poems.
Here is the  first 2 verses of her poem.

Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have.
Rmember that time
When you were tired of running
Or doing nothing much
And you were hot
And you flopped right down on the ground
Remember how the warm soil smelled
And the grass
That was summer.

Remember that time
When you were trying to climb in the tree
And you didnt know how
And your foot was hurting in the fork
But you were holding tight
To the branch
And remember how the bark smelt then
All dusty and dry but nice?
That was summer

We looked at her poem and decided the criteria for our poem was
- one idea per line
- capital letter at the beginning of each line
- no full stops
- each verse is about one idea
- it had to make sense
- the use of you is to hook in the reader.

Here are a few of our poems.

That Was Summer

Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have!
Remember the time
When your dad ripped open the packet full of sausages
And you were lying on the sand your mouth watering
And you could hear the crackling and sizzling of the barbeque
And you can smell the smoky flavour in the air
Remember how you finally bit into your steamy sausage
And the hot sausage burned the top of your mouth
That was summer

Remember the time
When you saw the sparkling water in the lake
And you were getting dragged out into the dark blue icey water by the boat
And you built up speed on the water skis
Remember how you jumped the waves the boat made
And the handle got slippery and you had to let go
That was summer

Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have!
Remember that time
When you hear the sound of watermelon crunching in your mouth.
And you were eating its cold ruby flesh.
And you feel the delicious fruit dissolve.
Remember how sweet and sugary the juice was going down your throat.
And the time you sat on the hot crispy sand and it quenched your thirst.

Remember the time
When you went to the scorching beach
And you were swimming in the refreshing water
And you felt the salt fizzing on you
Remember how you lay down on the sizzling sand
And the sun was shining in eyes
That was summer.

The School Council 2016

The school council election is when the classes all vote for one or two people to be on the council representing them.
If they want to be on the council you fill in the application form and write a speech. They must tell the class why they should be in the school council.
After that the class has a secret vote. That's when they get a piece of paper and write down the name of the person they think will do the best job on the council.

A councilor helps the school fundraise for lots of different things like swings, playgrounds and ipads.
They also organize fun days and the events. They meet every Tuesday and have a Captain (Kate Taylor) Secretary (Isla Adams) and Vice Captain (Hayden Smith). The rest are class representatives.
Kody, Nick and Charlie all applied and worked hard on their speech. It was very close as they all had some good points an information.
Phillipa (Pippi) was voted in as Room 5's class councilor. She felt wonderful and excited,

At the moment we are collecting ideas from all the kids in the school and deciding what our project will be for this year.

Here is the 2016 Maungatapere School Council.
